Pandemic Eats

I wanted to write this post to highlight some of my favorite vegan takeout meals that I have eaten during the shutdown. I typically try to photograph food for the Eburg Veg Guide in it’s natural environment so it was fun to switch it up a bit and bring it all home in containers to create the images. No surprise that my favorite takeout meals are some of my favorite restaurant meals during normal operation. I’m thrilled as many restaurants keep adding solid vegan options to their menu, and happily encourage more to do so!

I recognize that we are fortunate to live in a county only lightly affected by COVID-19 and commend everyone who has made an effort to support social distancing, staying home, and hygienic efforts. Working in the food service industry during this time has given me a unique perspective into what eating out means to people. I love that we have a variety of locally owned food businesses and see the struggle each person has faced while determining if or how they could safely continue to serve the community, what precautionary measures would need to be put in place, and if it were even feasible to continue to operate during a period of drastically reduced business.

One business I have seen really take off during this time is Ano Delivery and it has been wonderful to watch them become such an important asset to our community. They have compiled an amazing resource list of businesses and their current open status, including whether or not they were operating with reduced hours, and of course Ano Delivery will bring you food from any of them promptly for a small fee. Another local resource that has been helpful to many of us is a facebook group called KittCo local curbside take-out & delivery where business owners and patrons alike post about what you can eat in town. I hope both this group and the delivery service continue to thrive throughout our reopening, as we see our reactionary lifestyle changes find a longer term place as habits in our daily lives.

Consider supporting local & minority owned businesses any time you need to make a purchase. Not only does it help the local economy but it’s more environmentally conscious to shorten the supply chain whenever possible. Together we can continue to make Eburg a place we are proud to live!
